Coughing, sneezing, aching, and that strong desire to curl up in a ball and sleep all day. Whether you’ve got a cold or the flu, being sick can totally disrupt your life and leave you miserable. According to the CDC, American businesses lose about $7 billion each year just to the flu, and much more to colds and other flu-like illnesses. Busy people trying to avoid falling victim to these bugs have a fighting chance, as long as they follow some common sense advice. In this, the old rules might be the best ones to follow.
Simple Winter Wellness
- Wash your hands frequently. This is the number one way to avoid transmitting germs to your respiratory system. Wash after coming in contact with people showing symptoms, after using public spaces, and before eating or drinking anything.
- Keep hand sanitizer around for times when you can’t wash. Washing your hands with soap and water is best, but hand sanitizer will do a good job of killing most cold and flu germs.
- Clean surfaces you touch frequently. Keep a supply of antiseptic wipes and clean anything you touch on a regular basis. Kill the germs from keyboards, remote controls, cell phones, door knobs, and even pens to reduce the number of germs you come in contact with.
- Exercise regularly. Most doctors agree that daily cardio exercise helps to strengthen the body’s immune system, giving it an extra boost in fighting off cold and flu germs.
- Get enough sleep. Bodies suffering from sleep deprivation are often immune-suppressed, and have a harder time fighting off illness. Get as close to eight hours of sleep every day, and stick with a regular bedtime for optimum rest.
It’s not always possible to avoid every flu germ you come across, but making a habit of good avoidance techniques can lower your risk of getting sick and help you to recover faster if you do.
